Ambulatory
About a third of a resident's time during the three-year residency is spent in the ambulatory setting. In addition to the continuity clinic, a number of ambulatory block rotations are required. All residents spend one month during their internship in the emergency department during which they participate actively in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of a broad range of adult patients with medical and surgical illnesses. All residents spend a minimum of one month in a community ambulatory setting in which they work one-on-one with a physician in private practice. This opportunity allows exposure to business aspects of medicine and office management skills. All residents have additional ambulatory care blocks in general medicine and subspecialty clinics.
In addition to the mandatory ambulatory clinic experience, additional elective opportunities are available including full month rotations in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Hypertension, and Geriatric Medicine. Many of the required medicine subspecialty rotations include significant ambulatory experience, particularly Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, and VA Hematology.
Ambulatory training is available at the Jackson Medical Mall Internal Medicine Clinic, the VA Medical Center ambulatory facilities, the University Physicians Medical Pavilion, and the University Physicians multi-specialty practice in Flowood. An additional facility is under development at University Physicians Madison.
